Egyptologist. PhD and Aggregate in Oriental Antiquity (Egyptology). Full Professor of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Researcher, Member of the Plenary Committee and Coordinator of the "Representations, Discourses, Materiality and Uses of the Past" Group at CHAM — Centre for the Humanities. Elected member of the Faculty Council. Director of the First Portuguese Project of Archaeology in Egypt - "Palace of Apries – Memphis, Egypt" (2000 - 2010). Director of the Oriental Institute, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the U.N.L. (1998-2013). Executive Coordinator of the Department of History (2013-2021). President of Scientific Commission of the History Department of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (1995-2001; 2007-2009). Member of the pool of reviewers of the European Science Foundation (ESF); “Expertise” in various assessment panels ANR (French Research Funding Agency): “Laboratories of Excellence; “Equipement of Excellence” and “Projects Blanc”; Member of the pool of reviewers of the The Fund for Scientific Research-FNRS (F.R.S.-FNRS) and the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) in Belgium - ‘Excellence of Science’ (EOS) programme. Member of the pool of the reviewers of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). Its areas of investigation are the History and Archeology of Ancient Egypt; the Studies on Antiquity and its Reception and the Mediterranean World. Medal of Grand Officer of Public Instruction (2003).
