Duarte Nuno Chaves holds a PhD in Art History from the University of Évora. As a scholarship holder of the Fundo Regional de Ciência e Tecnologia do Governo Regional dos Açores (Regional Science and Technology Fund of the Regional Government of the Azores), he completed a post-doctoral project (2017-2019) entitled, “Religiosidade e memória coletiva em contexto de turismo cultural” (Religiosity and collective in the context of cultural tourism). He is currently an Integrated Doctoral Researcher at CHAM - Centre for Humanities, where he was the coordinator of the Art, History and Heritage research group and deputy director of the centre at the University of the Azores. He has collaborated with the University of the Azores as a Visiting Professor (2016-2023) in History, Tourism and postgraduate courses in Cultural Tourism. He has also supervised master's dissertations and doctoral theses at various national universities in the field of heritage. He held the position of Regional Director for Cultural Affairs in the 13th Regional Government of the Azores, and represented the Autonomous Region of the Azores on the Consultative Council of the UNESCO National Commission. As coordinator, author and co-author, he is responsible for several books, articles and chapters published in Portugal, Spain, Poland and Brazil, dealing with issues related to the insular space of Macaronesia, particularly in the fields of History, Identity, Religiosity, Traditions and Gastronomy. In 2018, his book As Imagens de Vestir da Procissão dos Terceiros: Um legado franciscano em S. Miguel, Açores, séculos XVII a XXI, based on his PhD thesis, was awarded the Lusitania-History of Portugal prize by the Portuguese Academy of History. He has also taken part in various projects in the field of Museology, and is responsible for organising the ‘Encontros de Boas Práticas Museológicas na Macaronésia’ (Meetings on Good Museological Practices in Macaronesia), which have been held since 2017.
