Ana Luiza de Castro Pereira Gomes has a degree in History at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Brazil). From 2002 to 2004, she completed an MA in Social and Cultural History also at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. Her MA thesis is entitled "O sangue, a palavra e a lei: faces da ilegitimidade na Vila de Sabará no século XVIII".
In 2005, she began her PhD at the Universidade do Minho, which she completed in 2010 with the thesis "Unidos pelo sangue, separados pela lei : família e ilegitimidade no Império Português, 1700 - 1799". At the moment, she is an hired researcher at NOVA FCSH.
