NOVA RESEARCH PORTAL
Catarina Simões is an early modern historian. She concluded her PhD in History in June 2021, with a thesis on the presence and political appropriation of non-European animals at the Renaissance Portuguese court, and on the cultural role these animals played in Europe. Between 2017 and 2023, she collaborated as a research assistant at the National Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Lisbon, where she worked with Portuguese colonial science collections, reflecting on the legacies of the Portuguese empire and the narratives produced on the cultural and material heritage associated with it. Her research focuses on the intersections between imperial history and natural history, with an approach centered on the relations between humans and non-human animals, and the processes of knowledge production and its multiple agents.
