Profile

Joana Baço is a maritime archaeologist and a member of the ERC Synergy Grant 4-OCEANS: Human History of Marine Life. Since 2022 she is the project responsible for management & communication and also for photogrammetry and 3D modelling. She’s part of the “Archaeology of Landscapes” research group, at CHAM – Centre for the Humanities, NOVA FCSH. She advances research on maritime and underwater cultural heritage, with a particular focus on anchorage zones and artisanal fishing traps, framing submerged archaeological sites and remains within their broader cultural context, being responsible for the photogrammetry of archaeological artefacts and more, specializing in submerged anchors, wooden ship parts, whale bones, among others. Over the last years, she has devoted herself especially to photogrammetric recording, science management and communication, and field missions in countries such as São Tomé and Príncipe, Cape Verde, Brazil, USA, UK and others countries in Europe, analysing human interactions with the ocean and its animal species, and the cultural heritage that arises from them. She gives special importance to science communication and the integration of blue humanities into the school curriculum, through archaeology and maritime history, underwater cultural heritage, community memory and intangible cultural heritage. Since 2024, she has co-directed the archaeological work of the MUCH LAGOS research project, giving continuity to the work she started in the bay of Lagos in 2013. She also participates in national and international maritime and underwater archaeology projects and also in research networks, such as Oceans Past Initiative.
