Ronaldo G. Gurgel Pereira is a Historian (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro) and Archaelogist (Universidade Nova de Lisboa). He also holds a PhD in Egyptology (Universität Basel), and is the author of the first grammar of Middle Egyptian in Portuguese ("Gramática Fundamental de Egípcio Hieroglífico"). He attended Phoenician-Punic epigraphy courses at the "École of Langues Anciennes de Sorbonne Université" (ELASU), from 2021 to 2023.
He was a FCT Post-Doctoral fellow (2012 - 2017) at CHAM-FCSH Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCT - SFRH/BPD/78279/2011/J538688O2R1Y), studying Late Period Egyptian Art (664-332 BCE) from the colections of Iberian Museums.
He became an Onassis fellow (2018) at the Department of Mediterranean Studies, University of the Aegean (Rhodes) (E2151317GRF9C), for studying Egyptian and Greek typologies of Egyptianizing scarab amulets from Archaic Period sanctuaries at Rhodes.
In 2021 he became a CAARI Scholar in Residence Fellow (Nicosia), for studying Phoenician typologies of Egyptianizing scarab amulets from Cyprus-Levant.
Since 2019 he is a research fellow at CHAM/NOVA FCSH, Universidade Nova de Lisboa (DL 57/2016/CP1453/CT0023), studying typologies og Egyptian, and Egyptianizing Greek/Phoenician scarab amulets in Portuguese territory. His research approaches Phoenician and Greek aegyptiaca in Portugal, Phoenician and Greek interactions in the Mediterranean, and includes teaching contents related to Egyptology, ancient Greek History, and Phoenician-Punic epigraphy.
Since 2020 he contributes to Brazilian Universities by lecturing (volunteering), with online courses (free of charges), on Middle Egyptian grammar and advanced courses of reading ancient Egyptian sources.

In 2022, he became director of the archaeological project "Akragas - The Quarter of Gate II" in an institutional agreement with the Parco Archeologico della Valle dei Templi, Agrigento. Its first season took place in September 2023 and obtained a formal partnership with the University of Ghent (Belgium), starting with the 2024 seazon.
In 2022-2023 he took part of the CEIMAR project “Guardianes de la muerte. Una búsqueda de los amuletos egipcios y egiptizantes en las necrópolis portuarias de Gadir” (CEI-JD-20), hosted by the Universidad de Cádiz, for studying Egyptian and Egyptianizing material from the Necropoles of Cadiz.
In 2024, he won the Mediterranean Studies Association (MSA) Grant for Curriculum Development in Mediterranean Studies (Project Akragas).
