On the Move - Diasporas, Mobilities and Transcultural Practices in a Changing World
NOVA FCSHCall for panels is open until 12.06.2025.

CHAM – Centre for the Humanities, NOVA University Lisbon, and the University of the Azores are pleased to invite the academic community to join the upcoming interdisciplinary VII CHAM International Conference On the Move – Diasporas, Mobilities and Transcultural Practices in a Changing World. It will be held on 15th, 16th and 17th April 2026 at NOVA University Lisbon – Campus Almada Negreiros.

This conference aims to bring together scholars from diverse disciplines to explore the complex dynamics of the history of diasporas, migration and mobility, its literary and artistic representations, and cultural exchange in a rapidly evolving global landscape. The official languages of this conference are English and Portuguese.

The study of diasporas, mobilities, and transcultural practices has taken on unprecedented relevance in an era of a rapidly accelerating globalising world. This is a broad phenomenon that spans the entirety of human history, from the earliest movements and migrations of human and non-human populations, towards the present-day refuges, exiled and internally displaced populations. Political developments, socio-economic dynamics, and environmental and climate change continuously shape, influence, and drive human mobility, fostering multiple interactions and the formation and definition of diverse identities. Grounded in contemporary challenges and looking toward the future, this conference creates a space for new debates and discussions both within and beyond academia. Adopting an interdisciplinary and comprehensive perspective, it aims to bring together diverse approaches, including historical, artistic, literary, cultural, and other fields of study.

We invite proposals that explore (but are not limited to) the following topics:

. Theoretical approaches and methods to study movements

. Historical and contemporary diasporas

. Migration, gender, and intersectionality

. Human and non-human movements and migrations

. Mobility and immobility

. Mobility regimes across urban, rural and border spaces

. Forced migration, asylum, and refugee experiences

. Internal displacement: practice, theories and policies

. Migrations, educational policies, and inclusion

. Indigenous mobilities and decolonial perspectives

. Environmental and climate migrations

. Heritage preservation of the history of diasporas and mobilities

. Transnational identities and belonging

. Material culture of movements

. The contribution of digital humanities to document the history of diasporas and mobilities

. Cultural hybridity, language, and intercultural communication

. Media, literature, and artistic representations of migration and promised lands
