In addition to extending over space, empires also extend over time. Inscribed in every imperial domination is a cultural representation of its aspiration to endure, just as no empire can stop its decline over time. The theme of this round table is the temporality of the two Iberian empires that crossed the Modern Age, the Portuguese and the Hispanic: their rise and decline, but also the loss of possessions and nostalgia for the glorious past mark post-imperial cultures in modernity, especially those of the peninsular metropolises.
With this activity, the round table attempts a first joint approach to a common historical experience, through a dialogue between specialists in imperial culture from Portugal and Spain in different historical periods.
