In the ambit of the project “Critical History of Cape-Verdean Literature”, a colloquium about Cape-Verdean women will take place on November 27, 2020. For a long time, women in Cape Verde played an almost silenced role, and were considered “merely housewives”. We have, however, identified several names that gave a voice to
the local female world, mainly through literature, such as the authors Maria Helena Spencer (1911-2006), Orlanda Amarílis (1924-2014), Fátima Bettencourt (1938-), Dina Salústio (1941-), and Carlota de Barros (1942-). They have all been committed to introducing, in an eloquent way, a social, human, and pedagogical preoccupation with some of the problems that afflict Cape-Verdean society.
