«Cervantes and the seas – 400 years of Persiles»
NOVA FCSH - Tower B, Auditorium 1 (1st floor), ID Building, Room 0.06 nad Room Multiusos 3

In memoriam José María Casasayas, «quixotesque» and honorable founder of the Asociación de Cervantistas, who in 2013 had dedicated the V CINDAC to Persiles, and, in that same year, had brought it to Lisbon.

Cervantes was in Lisbon as he returned from captivity in Argel. He had travelled through Italy, fought in the Battle of Lepanto, and lived as captive in Northern Africa, landing then in Barcelona as he returned to the Iberian Peninsula, crossing it afterwards. From the Mediterranean coasts towards the Atlantic coast – in the Tagus river city. In his last work, Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda, historia sententrional, published one year after his death, he tells us of the seas, the islands and the peoples of the North, as well as about the lands and peoples of the South, where his protagonists wandered after landing in Lisbon. This is the first city of a long path he will take until he gets to Rome. This journey was 400 years ago and this conference proposes to celebrate it, thus paying homage to the book and the author.
