The "Archaeology, Heritage, and Local Authorities" Meeting is part of the activities within the Almada Velha (Old Almada): heritage valorization of the historical urban center project. This aims to contribute to the research, management, and dissemination of the architectural and archaeological heritage of Almada's historic center.
Furthermore, it seeks to promote national debate on this subject. This conference intends to assess the performance of municipalities regarding architectural and archaeological heritage in mainland Portugal. It aims to identify best practices, acknowledge deficiencies and challenges, and primarily suggest pathways for a more effective resolution of the problems the country faces in this domain. It is important to define areas where municipalities can reinforce their competencies while recognizing those that are not within their purview. Additionally, evaluating the relationship with other administrative bodies competent in this field or exploring means of collaboration between municipalities and other stakeholders in this area is crucial. Reflecting on how to enhance and maximize the resources available within local authorities by leveraging the dynamism of local governance for cultural heritage is also a key aspect of this discussion
