Nas fronteiras do “Estado da Índia”: Guerra e diplomacia (Séculos XVI-XIX)
NOVA FCSH | Tower B, Auditorium 1 (first floor)

The study of military history nowadays is often combined with that of subjects related to diplomacy and frontier-building. In order to understand the complex reality of Portuguese presence in the Indian and Pacific Oceans regions in all of its different geographical and historical contexts it is increasingly necessary to connect the traditional study of war to that of diplomatic relations with Asian powers. This connection is fundamental to the understanding of the role of the “military frontier” in the ability to survive shown by the “Estado da Índia” during the several difficult moments it went through during its history.

This workshop grew out of a previous initiative dedicated to the military history of Portugal and its overseas empire in the Early Modern period. It aims to further the knowledge of the subject of the military and diplomatic frontiers of the “Estado da Índia” by both promoting a debate on the current state of historiography on the subject and publicizing the preliminary results of research being done on the area by MA students, PhD students and recent doctorates. This group of young researchers has an “interdisciplinary” nature, being composed of people from different areas, such as Art History and cultural history, alongside the more traditional fields of military and diplomatic history. The period covered by the communications will stretch from the beginnings of the Portuguese presence in Asia in the early 16th Century to the 19th Century.
