"Brief Introduction to...": The Luso-Dutch Wars of the 17th Century, by André Murteira
The 17th century was marked by wars between the Netherlands and Portugal, involving territories and populations in America, Asia, and Europe. How did this conflict begin, and what were the underlying issues? What was the state of the Portuguese empire before the conflict, and how did it change during this period? What is the significance of these wars for the history of Portugal? Historian André Murteira provides answers.
André Murteira is a Postdoctoral Researcher at CHAM-Center for the Humanities. Currently, he is working on the project XShips and War: Dutch and Iberian War Fleets in the Dutch-Iberian Global Conflict (1600-1669)», funded by FCT. He holds a Ph.D. in History (UNL) with a thesis on Portuguese navigation in Asia and the Cape route and Dutch corsair activity (1595-1625). He also has a master's degree in the History of Discoveries and Portuguese Expansion (UNL), with a dissertation on the India Run and Dutch corsair activity (1595-1625), published in 2012. His research has been published in journals such as the Journal of Military History, Tijdschrift voor Zeegeschiedenis, Análise Social, and Anais de História de Além-Mar. André Murteira, along with Hélder Carvalhal and Roger Lee de Jesus, edited the book The First World Empire: Portugal, War and Military Revolution (2021).
