Ways of Censorship and Freedom to Create and Publish
Censorship is a way of exerting power, and in Portugal, this type of control officially ended with the Carnation Revolution in 1974. How did newspapers stop sending proofs for review by the censors of the Pre-Examination Commission on April 25th? This is the starting point for a conversation with João Luís Lisboa about disobedience and censorship, the different forms of censorship during the dictatorship (with pre-publication censorship for newspapers and theater, and censorship after the publication of books), the strategies of publishers, journalists, actors, and directors to avoid censorship, the inevitable self-censorship among creators, the freedom to write exclusively in underground press, and indirect forms of censorship in the 21st century.
João Luís Lisboa is an Postdoctoral Researcher at CHAM, specializing in cultural issues in modern Portugal, particularly the relationship between forms and meanings in 18th-century communication. He also focuses on issues of knowledge and methodology in the History and Theory of Ideas. He is currently the director of this research center..
