Enslaved in America and Europe: Origins, Functions, and Resistances

Was slavery similar in America and Europe? Arlindo Manuel Caldeira addresses this question by explaining the differences regarding the geographical origins of enslaved individuals, the types of labor performed, the forms of resistance to this condition of extreme violence, and the consequences still present in our societies today. Did you know, for example, that many of the enslaved individuals brought to Portugal originated from North Africa and the Ottoman Empire, with a significant number also coming from China, India, and Japan?

Arlindo Manuel Caldeira is a Postdoctoral Researcher at CHAM-Centro de Humanidades. With a degree in History, he was a History teacher at Camões Secondary School (Lisbon). He has authored several books and dozens of articles, among which stand out "Slaves and Traffickers in the Portuguese Empire" and "Slaves in Portugal: From Origins to the 19th Century". His latest book, "The Call of Freedom: African Resistance to Slavery in Portuguese Influence Areas", is now available in bookstores.

The interview is conducted by Teresa Lacerda.
