This symposium brings together studies focused on the mass-circulation periodical press of the 19th and 20th centuries. The central theme examines the sensation generated by specific journalistic formats, such as controversy, sensationalist reporting, and crime coverage. The aim is to demonstrate how these situations, whether unexpected or deliberately provoked, were used by the press, intentionally or not, to boost newspaper and magazine circulation. The symposium will also explore the repercussions of these journalistic events, both on the incidents reported and on the shaping of public opinion, which at times led to dramatic outcomes. The historian Dominique Kalifa (1957-2020), renowned for his in-depth study of these themes, will be honoured during this gathering.
