CHAM - Centro de Humanidades da Universidade Nova de Lisboa and Universidade dos Açores, in partnership with the Institute of Art History hosted by NOVA FCSH (IHA), Casa Rui Barbosa Foundation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Vila Franca do Campo Municipal Museum is launching the IX International Colloquium on “The Manor House in Portugal and Brazil: Anatomy of Interiors. Centers and peripheries, crossroads and circulations”. The event will take place at the University of the Azores, with several study visits scheduled in the municipalities of Ponta Delgada, Vila Franca do Campo, Povoação and Ribeira Grande. The aim of this colloquium dedicated to the study of manor houses in Portugal and Brazil is to promote in-depth research into the interactions between centers and peripheries, exploring how these dynamics influenced the architecture and social role of manor houses in the territories involved. The focus is on the Portuguese mainland and islands and Brazil, examining the cultural, architectural and social exchanges between these spaces, in their relations of interdependence and gradual and sometimes complex assimilation. With this approach, the Colloquium aims to better understand the influences of ideas, people and techniques between centers of power and peripheral places, seeking to deepen how these relationships draw non-unidirectional circuits and how points of convergence were created in which different cultures, ideas and practices shaped modes of construction and uses of spaces, particularly sensitive in places of crossroads and crucial moments of change. In addition, the aim is to foster epistemological and methodological dialog between the Brazilian and Portuguese research teams, the exchange of knowledge and the mutual enrichment of studies on manor houses and their historical, cultural and architectural role in these different contexts.
