A Brief Introduction to... Epicureanism, with Leonor Santa Bárbara
Epicureanism developed in Greece in the 3rd century BC. What distinguishes this philosophical school from earlier ones? What are its key characteristics? For Epicurus, what constitutes happiness? What aspects contribute to happiness, from his point of view? In later periods, Epicureanism was associated with pleasure. But is this really important in this doctrine? Leonor Santa Bárbara guides us on an introductory journey into Epicureanism in the segment "A Brief Introduction to..." of "CHAM Talks, a podcast to listen to science."
Leonor Santa Bárbara is an Associate Professor in the Department of Portuguese Studies at NOVA FCSH and an integrated researcher at CHAM - Centre for the Humanities, where she is also deputy director. She specialises in Classical Studies, Greek Literature and Culture, Hellenistic Greece, Classical Foundations in Portuguese Culture, Reception of Antiquity, and Representations of Eros in art and literature.
The interview is conducted by Isabel Araújo Branco, in a live recording made as part of NOVA FCSH's Research and Innovation Day, in October 2024.
