On September 24, CHAM in collaboration with the Heritage and Current Challenges thematic line, is hosting an event that aims to explore the intersection between some of the fundamental dimensions of heritage and the theme of the strategic project Making and remaking the human.

The Thinking About Heritage Meeting aims to promote collective reflection and the sharing of knowledge about heritage as a social and cultural construct of memory and identity, historical narratives, cultural practices, and symbolic values, in order to support research into the reformulation of the concept of the human and humanity and its dichotomies — human/non-human, subhuman/superhuman, inhuman/more-than-human.

The choice of venue for these activitie, the Centro Científico e Cultural de Macau - Museu de Macau (CCCM), provides an ideal setting for reflecting, through the multidisciplinary nature of the research groups, on what a society chooses to investigate, remember, preserve, pass on, and value. We would therefore like to thank the Director of the CCCM, Dr. Carmen Amado Mendes, for this institution’s prompt cooperation in hosting the event.

The program begins with a workshop reflecting on the ongoing research being conducted by members of the research groups, who are invited to compare approaches and lines of inquiry and to share artifacts, bibliographic references, and methodological applications, in order to collectively strengthen the development of a transdisciplinary approach to the theoretical and epistemological foundations of the concepts of the human, the non-human, and humanity. The afternoon will be devoted to guided tours of the CCCM’s two exhibition spaces: A Condição Histórico-cultural de Macau nos séculos XVI e XVII and Colecção de Arte Chinesa, providing direct exposure to the curation, interpretation, and heritage management of the spaces and collections that make the CCCM a national and international leader in Asian studies. This will be followed by a closing session dedicated to sharing the results of the reflection workshop, consolidating future collaborative efforts at a time of transition to a new leadership at CHAM.

Participation is open to integrated members of CHAM, subject to prior and mandatory registration. Registration must be completed by September 11 using this form.
