Installed in the 16th century Convent of S. António, Casa das Memórias (House of Memories) is an exhibition centre created to safeguard the memory of the old convent and its history into the present. Inaugurated in June 2013, Casa das Memórias is located in the former convent cellar and is part of the current Municipal Library Tomaz Borba Vieira, in the city of Lagoa, island of São Miguel, Azores.
Goals
The convent of S. António de Lagoa is a religious property, founded in the 1640s and rebuilt in mid-18th century. Throughout this period, a community of around 20 Franciscan friars lived there. In the first half of the 19th century it was nationalised and today it is the property of the Town Hall of Lagoa, hosting its Municipal Library.
Casa das Memórias intends to rescue the memory of this space. To this end, the museum approach is apparent in two different rooms: the first room corresponds to the long time, spanning the centuries of life of the Convent; the second represents the short time, displaying aspects of daily life of the convent.
