Romano Torres: a historical archive representative of contemporary edition

This project aimed to offer the community information on the collection of the centennial publisher Romano Torres, especially regarding its historical archive and catalogue of published titles. The quality and time extension of the conserved materials confer it an exceptional character among the universe of archives and the publishing heritage still existing in Portugal. It is hoped that the safeguarding and visibility of this unique collection will make the State and civil society aware of the need to ensure basic conditions for the safekeeping, treatment and access to this type of historical archives, which have been hitherto badly neglected in our country.

Goals

In articulation with the treatment and description of the historical archive of Romano Torres, it was decided to make available on the Internet the inventory in ICA-Atom (a free software for archival description) available from the International Council on Archives. The full catalogue of the publisher was also made available through a database loaded in the Bibliobase application, as well as a representative core of relevant documents, previously selected and digitized (including iconography, for further details pls. see sections Search and Editora Romano Torres). Another goal was to create the Romano Torres website (http://fcsh.unl.pt/chc/romanotorres/), to broaden the access, give visibility and unity to the project and integrate a series of studies and work tools concerning the world of books and publishing.
