João Moreira holds a PhD in History from ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa. His doctoral thesis, published by Edições Afrontamento, was awarded the 2025 History of Europe Prize by the Portuguese Academy of History and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He is also the recipient of the 2023 Mário Soares Prize (EDP Foundation) and the 2023 Victor de Sá Prize in Contemporary History (University of Minho). His research focuses on the transformation of the Portuguese cultural landscape during the 1968–1986 period, examining specifically the theoretical and political trajectories of António José Saraiva, Eduardo Prado Coelho, and João Martins Pereira.
He has authored several articles on Portuguese intellectuals and is the editor of an anthology of texts by João Martins Pereira focusing on Portugal’s integration into the European Economic Community.
In addition to his work on the national cultural and intellectual landscape, his research interests encompass the history of radical left-wing organizations, with a particular focus on those rooted in the theoretical and political legacy of Leon Trotsky—the subject of his master's dissertation.
