The strategic importance of the Lisbon river entrance corresponds to an unparalleled scientific and heritage potential in Portugal, which occupies an important place in the development of underwater archeology in the country. Shipwrecks from the modern period stand out, between Cabo da Roca and Bugio, having been studied for several decades by several generations of archaeologists. The project aims to contextualize shipwreck sites from the modern era in transoceanic navigation, adopting, whenever possible, methodologies with minimal impact on archaeological contexts. The research includes the systematic survey of a vast area, based on the analysis of historical and geophysical data, between Cabo Raso and São Julião da Barra. To date, the analysis of multibeam surveys carried out by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), within the scope of the Coastal Monitoring Programme of Continental Portugal – COSMO programme, which cover the northern area of the bar and the surroundings of the Bugio lighthouse. These made it possible to locate targets that revealed, after diving, previously unknown archaeological sites, highlighting three shipwrecks between Parede and Carcavelos – Parede 1, Carcavelos 12 and Carcavelos 13, which show characteristics that point to the 18th or early 19th century and military use.
