The main focus of this edition of the conference is the publication of the Critical History of Cape Verdean Literature – From the Origins to 1960 – Almanacs, Claridade and Certeza. Volume I, whereby a research team will be created to debate this island literature, from its beginnings up to the present day, to be held in four editions over the next four years (2024, 2025, 2026 e 2027).
The Critical History of Cape Verdean Literature to be produced will be a work of collective authorship, bringing together Cape Verdean and foreign specialists, explaining the constants, variations, and ruptures of Cape Verdean literature over time. Its chapters should present, debate, and propose a critical review of the major theoretical issues of the literature of this country, its periods, movements, authors and works (canonical or not), as well as their historical, political, cultural, and artistic contexts. The conference will also pay tribute to figures such as Jaime de Figueiredo (1905- 1974) – literary critic, essayist, plastic artist, playwright – and to Arnaldo França (1925- 2015) – poet, literary critic, essayist, and researcher.
