Lecture "A Livraria Moraes Editora: adventures, projects and accidents" by Sara Ludovico (CHAM).

The lecture is broadcast on CHAM's Youtube channel. For those who want to participate in the subsequent debate, please request access to Zoom by sending a message to daniel.melo@fcsh.unl.pt.

This will be a brief journey through the history of Livraria Moraes Editora in order to make visible its undeniable and virtuous attempt to form an influential thought and a sense of intellectual questioning. Acquired by António Alçada Baptista in the symbolic year of 1958, at the time of Humberto Delgado's galvanizing candidacy for the presidential elections, it involved figures such as Pedro Tamen, João Bénard da Costa, Nuno Bragança, among others. By unraveling its most emblematic and important collections and understanding the editorial choices of this publisher, reconciling freedom, essay, religion, literature and politics, it is possible to retrace almost 30 years of the history of the Portuguese 20th century and capture the spirit of the time that was going through.

Sara Ludovico holds a degree and a master's degree in Portuguese Studies from FCSH-UNL, where she is preparing her doctoral dissertation on Livraria Moraes Editores. She has been awarded a PhD scholarship and other research projects by FCT and is a researcher at CHAM, NOVA FCSH. She currently works at the Portuguese Parliament and previously worked at the Portuguese Book and Library Institute and was a reader of Portuguese Language and Literature at the Camões Institute in Italy and Thailand. She regularly collaborates with several publishers as a proofreader and translator, especially of works of Italian literature (Claudio Magris, Giorgio Bassani, Luigi Pirandello, etc.). Her main research interests focus on contemporary Portuguese literature and culture, the history of the book, the Portuguese language, publishing and translation.
