The research group Antiquity and its Reception is organizing an international conference under the theme «Expressions of Antiquity in Modern and Contemporary Art and Literature».

This event intends to promote the scientific debate about the reception of Antiquity, on what concerns the modern and contemporary times of the occidental world. These centuries were highlighted by a renewed interest in the ancient world: from the recovery of the classical canons, in the 15th century, to the rediscovery of the Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilizations, in the 19th century. Hence, it is possible to observe in modern and contemporary times an artistic and literary production which is greatly influenced by the memory and legacy of this remote past, where the modern and contemporary cultural agents sought for “new” topoi to integrate their works.  

This scientific meeting will feature the participation of Portuguese researches who work on these subject matters, but will also count with the presence of international specialists. The focus will be on research areas that range from Antiquity to Contemporary times, addressing topics such as Literature, Art or Music. Thus, this conference intends to promote a discussion within the field of the Reception studies, promoting the imperative interdisciplinary required for this thematics.
