The Velas Colloquia, which are the result of a fruitful partnership between CHAM Açores, the Santa Casa da Misericórdia das Velas, the Velas Town Hall (S. Jorge Island, Azores) and the Regional Directorate for Cultural Affairs, have encouraged for the presentation of papers, the dissemination of scientific knowledge and the debate on themes associated with History, Heritage, Culture, and the Arts. - fundamental areas of the CHAM- Centre for the Humanities- as part of studies around the insular and Atlantic world, particularly Macaronesia.
Gradually, the event gained regional and national prominence, as well as an international dimension and an important place in the planning of UI&D activities. This year, the interdisciplinary work will be based on issues associated with the History of the Atlantic and its interaction with Memory and Visual Culture. The aim is for the role and importance of the image, as a historiographical source, a symbol of post-modern culture and a reflection of contexts, societies and daily life, to take centre stage in the analysis and reflections.
